Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-10

1. In what ways are people focused on SELF? (Could be positive or negative)

2. Read Ephesians 4:22-24. Describe, in your own words, how a person can put off the old self and put on the new self.

3. Justin talked about how our enemy is like a spider, working to re-direct us towards the web of sin. What are some "old self" lies spoken over us in society today and what are the "new self" truths we should believe instead?

4. Definition of idol: any person or thing that consumes your thoughts, words, time, energy, or money other than God. In an honest assessment of self, what idols have been crowding out God in your life?

Reminders from the end of the message:

  • We are BELOVED. (Ephesians 5:1) This is the remedy for idolatry in our hearts.
  • Holiness comes through an identity transformation. (Ephesians 5:8) Jesus’ holiness is placed on your account before God through faith.
  • This is what society is missing. Because we are beloved, His power to be holy is now in us.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:14 says "Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry."

Break up into groups of 2-3 and pray over the answers given to #4. Speak God's truth over the lies of the enemy. Pray specifically for each person to flee from idols and run towards holiness every day through the power given to them through faith in Jesus.

For further study: Read 1 Peter 1:14-23 together. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you; don’t rush. Take your time to prayerfully meditate on what He is saying to you through His Word. Talk with your group and write down ways in which God’s Word can be applied directly to your relationships, career, family, friends, circumstances, struggles, etc.
