Firm Foundation

In July of this year, my wife Bert and I will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. As we look back, I don’t think we would have changed a thing in the script.

Not everything we have walked through has been easy. There were difficult times and challenging times, there were also times of incredible joy and laughter that we wished would go on forever. There were many different mountain tops, many low valleys, and many different seasons. Throughout all these seasons, Bert and I have trusted and built those 40 years on Jesus Christ as our firm foundation.

Matthew 7:25-27 is a story that describes how we can stand throughout the storms and many changes in life by building and trusting in a foundation that is immovable. Yes, the house will get weather-beaten, worn and bruised from the storms that come but it remains standing because of its strong foundation.

Matthew 7:25 says, “The rains came down, the streams rose up, the winds blew and beat against the house, yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.” I said earlier, Bert and I have been through some storms. But our house is still strong because of the foundation that has held us together; the rock that is Jesus Christ.

Storms will come, and Bert and I understand that we can’t control the storms, but we can endure them with our lives built on the foundation of Jesus Christ.

Today, I pray your heart will embrace the lyrics of the song, Goodness of God by Bethel Music:

"All our lives he has been faithful;
All our lives he has been so, so good;
With every breath that we are able,
We will sing of the goodness of God."
