HUMBLE AUDACITY | 05.24.26 | JUSTIN KENDRICK

SERMON RECAP
In Mark 7:24–35, Jesus reveals a radically different way to approach God. After confronting the religious leaders about outward rule-following without inward change, Jesus encounters two people very different than the Pharisees - a Gentile woman begging for her daughter’s healing and a man who is deaf and unable to speak. Through these encounters, Jesus shows that neither self-made righteousness nor self-defined truth can heal the human heart. Instead, the way to God is what Pastor Justin called “humble audacity” —honest acknowledgement of our unworthiness while entirely confidence that God is perfect love.

The Syrophoenician woman demonstrates this posture. She does not deny her need, defend herself, or walk away offended. Instead, she humbly admits her unworthiness while remaining completely confident in Jesus’ goodness. In the healing of the deaf man, Jesus reveals the depth of His love by identifying personally with human suffering. Ultimately, the cross becomes the clearest evidence that we are deeply sinful, and yet profoundly loved by God. Jesus did not come to bring divine judgment upon us — He came to receive it for us so that we could be restored to God through grace.

HOW TO USE THIS DISCUSSION GUIDE
As you lead the discussion, we follow a discipleship framework that helps move us from learning to transformation:
Head → Heart → Hands → Share → Check-In
Leader Reminder: There are multiple questions in each section. Leaders should prepare ahead of time and use discernment to choose the questions that best serve their group. The goal of this discussion is not just conversation but transformation. Encourage participation, honesty, and practical obedience.

ICE BREAKER
  • What’s the funniest or most ridiculous thing you’ve ever done because you really wanted something?
  • What’s one time in your life when persistence paid off?
  • Are you more likely to give up quickly or keep pushing when something matters to you? What’s a real-life example?

HEAD
What does the scripture show?
  • In Mark 7:24–35, how does Jesus respond to the Syrophoenician woman? What does her response reveal about her faith and understanding of Jesus?
  • What contrast do we see between the religious leaders earlier in Mark 7 and the Gentile woman in this passage? What does Mark want us to notice about the different ways they approach God?
  • How does Jesus heal the deaf man? How is this healing different from earlier healings in Mark’s Gospel? What does this reveal about Jesus’ heart toward people?
HEART
What do we believe?
  • Which tendency do you relate to more: trying to define truth and goodness for yourself (“just be yourself”) or trying to prove yourself by following the right rules? How have you seen that shape your relationship with God or others?
  • What does it look like for us to approach God with the same posture of humility as the Syrophoenician woman? How can humility open the door for healing, restoration, and deeper relationship with God?
  • How do Jesus’ actions — especially His willingness to identify with us and go to the cross for us — assure you personally of God’s love? How does believing that truth reshape the way you relate to God?
HANDS
Practice Together in Community
  • Where in your life are you tempted to rely on your own goodness, performance, or control instead of trusting fully in God’s grace? What would it look like to surrender that area to God this week?
  • What would “humble audacity” look like in one specific situation you are facing right now? What will be different about your life because of this posture of expectation?
  • Who in your life right now may need someone to slow down, listen, and enter into their struggle? What is one practical way you can reflect the compassion of Jesus this week?
  • What do you need from the group right now—prayer, encouragement, wisdom, or accountability?

SHARE: MISSION
Living Out the Message This Week
